Michelle Ryan will leave EastEnders later this year, ending Zoe Slater’s full-time return after one year back on the soap. The timing matters because she had only just re-established the character in the show’s recent run, after brief appearances in June last year and a full-time return in August.

Michelle Ryan first played Zoe Slater from 2000 to 2005, then came back for brief appearances in June last year before reprising the role full time in August. Since then, Zoe has been pushed through a rapid sequence of plot turns: she was shot in the abdomen just days after her arrival and later lay unconscious on the floor of the Queen Vic.
A flashback then showed Zoe had given birth to twins during her absence. She believed her daughter was stillborn, and she later told Sharon Watts that the twins’ father was Dennis Rickman. Those details set up the story’s wider fallout and explain why the exit now lands as more than a routine cast change.

“We can confirm Zoe Slater will be departing EastEnders later this year. We wish Michelle Ryan all the best for the future,” a spokesperson said on Saturday 11 July. “However, we never comment on future storylines as we don’t want to spoil it for the viewers.”
That leaves the show with one clear position and one withheld detail: the departure is set, but the route out is being kept back. The wording is careful, because it signals an ending without handing viewers the payoff early.

The Sun reported that the exit has already been filmed, and alleged that Ryan quit after being refused time off from filming commitments. It also alleged that the story team planned Zoe’s departure as a death, which would close the character’s latest chapter rather than leaving the door open for another return.
At Christmas, Jasmine Fisher revealed herself to be Zoe’s long-lost daughter, while Anthony Trueman was exposed as the twins’ father and later knocked Zoe unconscious before lunging towards Jasmine. Zoe then handed herself in to protect Jasmine, Kat Moon forced her to come clean to her granddaughter, and Jasmine ended up behind bars before Josh Goodwin emerged from the shadows after Jasmine was jailed. With that much recent movement already packed into the storyline, the remaining question is whether Zoe leaves by death or by another route when the exit reaches screen later this year.
