The Astros activated LaMonte Wade Jr. from the 10-day injured list on July 4, 2026, ending a stretch that kept him out for just short of a month because of a hamstring strain. The move gives Houston another left-field option at a time when that spot has been a revolving door.

Wade’s return comes after a quick start to his second stint in the organization. He was released from a minor league contract with the White Sox at the start of June, then signed with the Astros soon after. He appeared in the first four MLB games of his 2026 season with Houston before the hamstring injury sent him to the injured list.

What the Astros changed on July 4

Houston made four roster moves in all. In addition to activating Wade, the club optioned Jake Meyers and Joey Loperfido to Sugar Land and called up Zach Dezenzo from Triple-A. The reshuffle points to a changing outfield picture as the Astros try to find the right mix.

The most notable part of that mix is that Yordan Alvarez is being used mostly as a designated hitter to help keep him healthy. That leaves the Astros looking for answers in the outfield, especially in left field, where they have rotated through several options. Wade adds another name to that competition.

Why Wade matters now

Wade is not being asked to carry the offense on his own, but he does bring a track record that suggests he can help stabilize the position. Since 2022, he has posted a.292/.354/.373 line in less than five years of MLB work, including 381 plate appearances in that span. His recent results have been mixed, though, and 2025 was particularly rough. He ran a.353 BABIP in 148 plate appearances, but that did not translate into production, and he finished with a.206/.264/.316 line and a 62 wRC+.

Defensively, there is some reason for optimism. In 2026, Wade logged +1 Defensive Runs Saved and +2 Outs Above Average in 333 innings, which at least gives Houston a player who has shown he can handle the field when healthy.

What comes next for Houston

The immediate question is whether Wade can stay on the field long enough to establish a role. The Astros clearly need depth with the way the outfield has been handled, and the July 4 moves suggest the team is still sorting out how it wants to align the group around Alvarez. With Meyers moved down and Taylor Trammell and Brice Matthews set to get center field work, Houston is betting on flexibility while Wade works back into game shape.

That makes his return important even if it is not flashy. The Astros did not activate Wade just to fill a spot for a day. They brought him back because they need another usable bat and another possible answer in left field, even if the situation continues to change from week to week.
