Michelle Ryan Leaves EastEnders as Zoe Slater Exit Looms

Michelle Ryan is leaving EastEnders as Zoe Slater will depart later this year, ending a comeback that began about one year ago. The exit follows Ryan’s return to the soap after more than a decade away, and it leaves the character’s next move unresolved on screen.

A spokesperson told Radio Times on Saturday 11 July: "We can confirm Zoe Slater will be departing EastEnders later this year. We wish Michelle Ryan all the best for the future." The same statement added: "However, we never comment on future storylines as we don’t want to spoil it for the viewers."

Michelle Ryan and the comeback

Ryan played Zoe Slater on the One soap from 2000 to 2005 before returning first in brief appearances in June last year and then full time in August. That timeline makes this a short-lived return rather than a long relaunch, which is the part that will sting viewers who treated the comeback as a reset for the character.

Zoe’s recent run has already carried a heavy amount of story. She was shot in the abdomen after being caught in the crossfire of a fight between Jack Branning and Ravi Gulati, later gave birth to twins during her absence, and believed her daughter was stillborn. She also searched for her missing son for five months and lied to Sharon Watts by saying Dennis Rickman was the father.

Radio Times statement on 11 July

The 11 July statement matters because it draws a clean line under the return without giving the ending away. EastEnders said only that Zoe will depart later this year, while The Sun reported that the exit has already been filmed and alleged that the story team decided Zoe would die.

Those are not the same thing. One is an official line that protects the plot; the other is a report pointing to a permanent exit. For viewers, that means the broad direction is set, but the final shape of the departure is still being kept back for the screen.

Kat Moon and the fallout

Zoe’s family story has kept moving at speed. At Christmas, Jasmine Fisher revealed herself as Zoe’s long-lost daughter, after working with Chrissie Watts to torment her mother, while Anthony Trueman was exposed as the twins’ father. Kat Moon then forced her daughter to come clean.

The strongest reading now is simple: EastEnders has used Ryan’s return to refresh Zoe’s history and then moved her back toward an exit before the reunion could settle into a longer tenure. If the final episodes do end with a death, the show will be turning a brief comeback into a hard stop rather than a pause.
