Jerry Jones has not closed the door on another run at Maxx Crosby, and the timing matters because the Dallas Cowboys remain highly interested as training camp approaches. The idea is straightforward: Dallas believes it needs more bite on defense, and Crosby remains the kind of edge rusher who can change that conversation immediately.
That interest has been real all offseason. The Cowboys reportedly tried three times to trade for Crosby, while Jones said in March that he did not anticipate another run at the player but would not rule anything out. For Dallas, that is about as clear a sign as it gets that the door is still open.
Why the Cowboys keep coming back to Crosby
The attraction is easy to understand. Crosby has been one of the league's most productive defensive players, and last season he finished with 73 tackles, 10 sacks, two forced fumbles, one interception and six passes defended. Over his career, he has compiled 439 tackles, 69.5 sacks and 110 games, production that explains why so many teams would keep asking the same question.
For the Cowboys, the need is even sharper because their defense hit rock bottom last season. Dallas also gave up draft capital when it sent a 2027 first-round pick for Quinnen Williams, which makes any major move more complicated. But if the goal is to raise the ceiling of the defense quickly, Crosby is exactly the sort of player who forces a serious discussion.
What Jerry Jones is really weighing
Jones has not sounded like an owner ready to chase at any price, but he has also left enough room for the idea to survive. In March, he told reporters he did not anticipate another run at Crosby, but he would not rule anything out. That is important because it suggests Dallas is still monitoring the market rather than moving on completely.
There is also a broader football case for the move. Dallas already has an offense led by Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, so the urgency is on the other side of the ball. A defense built around Williams, Kenny Clark, DaRon Bland and rookie Caleb Downs would look even more complete with Crosby added to the mix.
The obstacle, of course, is the cost. The Las Vegas Raiders and Baltimore Ravens once agreed to a trade that would have sent Crosby to Baltimore for two first-round picks, only for the deal to collapse when Crosby failed his physical because of a bad knee. That tells you two things: the player is highly valued, and any team serious about getting him will need both conviction and flexibility.
For Dallas, the next step is simple enough to explain, even if it is hard to execute. If the Cowboys are still serious, they must decide whether Crosby is worth another major swing before camp begins. If they are not, this could be another case of a team admiring a difference-maker while never quite getting to the finish line.
