House of the Dragon season 3 episode 4 now puts Rhaenyra Targaryen in a tighter bind. Emma D'Arcy says the Ormund Hightower deception starts a kind of paranoia for her, even as she keeps pressing for legitimacy on the Iron Throne.
“I love that amid a broader battle and desire for legitimacy, you get to see a person on the first day of the job, coming in as the equivalent of the CEO finally getting to have a look at the balance sheet,” D'Arcy said. That line fits the episode’s setup: Rhaenyra is not just ruling, she is taking stock under pressure from rats in the Red Keep, a starving population, and even trivial demands like more candlesticks for the palace.

Season 3, Episode 3 is now streaming on HBO Max, and the episode keeps Rhaenyra’s workload unglamorous and immediate. She is balancing the freedoms she has given Alicent and Helaena as prisoners of war while trying to establish authority after taking the Iron Throne.
D'Arcy also said, “I like the pragmatism of that detail that [Episode 3 writer] Sarah Hess wrote in there.” The actor’s point is plain: the story works because it treats power as administration before it treats it as spectacle, which gives the episode a different kind of pressure than battlefield talk alone can deliver.

By the end of the episode, Rhaenyra and Daemon learn they have been tricked by Ormund Hightower, who handed over an imposter in place of Daeron. D'Arcy called that moment “a case of mistaken identity, about a plant and discovering a stranger inside the castle walls,” and that is exactly where the episode sharpens.
The real Daeron still sits outside Rhaenyra’s reach as a potential usurper to her throne. That leaves her with a practical problem, not just an emotional one: every person passing through her orbit now looks like a possible probe, decoy, or trap.

“I think there’s something interesting happening with the Ormund deception broadly and I think it marks the beginning of a kind of paranoia for Rhaenyra,” D'Arcy said. She added that Ormund is “a totally unknown quantity,” and that he becomes “the boogeyman for Rhaenyra, and fuels a broader distrust of her council, her allies, her court at large.”
That distrust sits on top of a contradiction the episode refuses to smooth out: Rhaenyra is taking power and seeking legitimacy while also becoming more suspicious because of the deception. D'Arcy said the act intensifies “a distrust that Rhaenyra is feeling” and leaves “a lack of stability in her position.”
For viewers, the useful takeaway is simple. The episode turns the fake Daeron into a warning that the real danger is no longer only the battlefield; it is the uncertainty inside the castle itself, where Rhaenyra now has to rule while wondering who is real and who is planted.
