Barrie Mason warns of delays as Great Yorkshire Show reaches 37,500

Barrie Mason said visitors to the Great Yorkshire Show should allow extra time for their journeys as the event runs in Harrogate from 14 to 17 July. Up to 37,500 people are expected each day, and tickets for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday have already sold out.

The daily limit has been increased by 2,500 this year, raising the show’s capacity to 37,500 a day. The showground is also expected to handle the usual flow of road traffic linked to a large four-day agricultural event in North Yorkshire.

Mason, North Yorkshire Council’s assistant director for highways, said: “With hot weather forecast and high traffic levels anticipated, there may be increased congestion and delays.” He was speaking to visitors and people using main roads in the area.

Friday tickets remain on sale. Adult entry costs £36.50, children’s entry costs £13, and a family ticket costs £89 for two adults and up to three children.

Leeds and Harrogate trains

Visitors can reach the show by train and bus. Trains run roughly every half an hour between Leeds and Harrogate, and every 30 minutes between York and Harrogate.

A free return shuttle bus runs from Harrogate station to the Great Yorkshire Showground between 07:20 BST and 19:00. The Number 7 bus runs every hour and passes the showground’s entrance.

Great Yorkshire Showground crowd levels

The Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate draws 140,000 visitors and more than 8,500 animals each year. The 167th edition is taking place this year, with appearances from Kelvin Fletcher, Liz Fletcher, Peter Wright, Jules Hudson and Harriet Cowan.

That scale is why the ticket sell-outs matter. Three days have already gone, or gone close enough to full capacity that no more tickets are available, while Friday still has room for people who can travel later in the week.

Harrogate Friday tickets

For anyone still planning a visit, Friday is the remaining option on sale, and public transport is the clearest way to avoid adding to the pressure on roads around Harrogate. The show’s crowd limit and the weather warning leave less room for delay than usual.
