Ryan Fecteau Says ICE Shooting Killed One in Biddeford, Maine

One person died Monday morning in Biddeford, Maine, after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were involved in a shooting near Pool Street, Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau said. He said the Maine State Police were gathering details at the scene and that he would share more as information reached him.

“These are the details that I have at this time. I will provide further updates, as they are relayed to me,” Fecteau said in a short statement about Monday morning’s shooting. He also said he expected the FBI to take over the investigation.

Ryan Fecteau statement

Fecteau, a Biddeford Democrat and speaker of the Maine House, tied the shooting to the immediate work of state investigators. His statement left the core facts narrow: the shooting happened near Pool Street, ICE agents were involved, and one person was killed.

The case lands in a broader pattern. Monday morning’s shooting is at least the 11th fatal shooting involving ICE or Border Patrol agents since the beginning of the second Trump administration, and the total includes this month’s fatal shooting of 52-year-old Lorenzo Araujo in Houston.

Maine ICE surge

The Biddeford shooting comes after Maine saw a surge in ICE agents earlier this year as part of the Trump administration’s Operation Catch of the Day. That surge was cut short after the fatal shootings of two protesters in Minneapolis triggered nationwide pushback against the agency’s tactics.

In January, nearly 200 people were detained in Maine during the ICE surge, and only 11 had criminal convictions. That record gives the Biddeford case added weight for people watching how federal immigration enforcement has been used in Maine and who has been swept up in it.

FBI investigation

Fecteau said the FBI was expected to take over next, shifting the case from the scene response to a federal investigation. The immediate question is who was killed and what led to the fatal encounter, because those details will determine how the shooting is judged under state and federal review.
