Mack and Ross at the farm
Mackenzie Boyd asks Ross Barton for help with a job at the farm next week, then tries to check whether they are still okay before they go off together. That small attempt to reset the mood does not hold; the pair argue and tussle on the barn’s mezzanine, and Ross is pushed over the edge in the confrontation.
Lawrence Robb says Mack is not approaching the scene as a planned attack. “He wants the truth - he wants to hear it straight from the horse's mouth. What happens at the farm, however, is not premeditated.” That makes the movement from complaint to physical confrontation feel sudden, and it leaves Ross exposed in a scene that is built around anger rather than calculation.
Charity, Leyla, and betrayal
Robb says Mack is heartbroken after Charity’s confession, but the anger landing on Ross is tied to something more specific: Ross knew about Leyla’s parentage. “Mack feels deeply betrayed by Ross. They were becoming close friends, so learning that Ross knew about Leyla feels like a big betrayal.”
Robb also puts the emotional damage in sharper terms: “Ultimately, he's heartbroken. He's absolutely beside himself with grief, both from the betrayal about Leyla's parentage and because his heart hurts for Charity and the fact that she's gone through all of this trauma and had to keep a secret for so long. He feels so much anger towards Todd.” In other words, the farm blow-up sits inside a wider loyalty crisis, not just a single row between two men.
Chloe and the protection mode
Robb adds a complication that keeps Mack from becoming a simple wronged husband figure. “I think there's a lot of anger directed towards Ross - not so much because of the infidelity (Mack committed a similar act of betrayal with Chloe a few years ago) but because of the reality of Leyla's biological parentage.” That history matters because it blunts any easy moral line between betrayal and retaliation.
He says Mack “doesn't really get much time to deal with it because he immediately enters protection mode,” which is the practical next beat for this storyline. Sarah and Jacob do not know the truth yet, and that missing piece means the fallout is still in motion rather than finished; the question now is whether the push at the barn leaves Ross seriously hurt or simply sets up the next round of damage.
