Georgia Furniture Mart store closures are now permanent after 40 years in business, with total liquidation sales starting Thursday at the Norcross and Kennesaw locations. Michael Hall and Tim Padden said the decision follows an evolving retail landscape and the sale of the company’s real estate properties.
Hall said, "We are deeply thankful to everyone who has been part of this journey and entrusted us with their homes" and added, "While this chapter is coming to a close, the memories and relationships we’ve built will always remain." Those remarks put the closure on a personal footing for customers who bought from the chain over decades and now have only a brief window before the liquidation tables open.
Norcross and Kennesaw sales
92,000 square feet in Norcross and an attached 20,000-square-foot outlet store are part of the footprint being wound down, along with the Kennesaw showroom opened in 2024. The chain’s expansion now runs in reverse, and shoppers at both stores face a last-chance sale format rather than a normal retail calendar.
40 years of local business reach back to 1986, when Hall founded the company as Underpriced Furniture before the name changed to Georgia Furniture Mart in 2020. The business also opened a Tucker distribution center in 2020 to support next-day delivery, which shows how recently it was still investing in operations before the closure decision.
Atlanta metropolitan area impact
The company’s presence across the Atlanta metropolitan area included support for local veterans organizations, youth programs, and St. Jude. That history makes the shutdown more than a store-by-store exit; it removes a long-running local seller from the market while liquidation signs go up at both remaining showrooms.
The exact date the showrooms will close for the final time has not been set, and the number of employees affected has not been disclosed. For customers, the immediate move is simple: the sale begins Thursday in Norcross and Kennesaw, and the stores will move through inventory until the closing timeline is finished.
