Shaun Dooley Joins Hadestown in London From 15 September 2026

Shaun Dooley will join Hadestown in London as Hades from 15 September 2026, giving the production a new principal casting line-up on a fixed start date. Danielle De Niese, Fayth Ifil, Malinda Parris, and Nathan Sykes are also joining the company, with the change built around a single relaunch point rather than a staggered rollout.

The update puts Dooley in one of the show’s central roles even though his background is drawn mainly from television, film, and stage work such as Mr Bates Vs The Post Office, Criminal Record, Changing Ends, It's a Sin, Gentleman Jack, The Stranger, Broadchurch, Misfits, Saltburn, and Hills of California. That mix makes the casting notable: Hadestown is bringing in an actor whose credits lean outside the usual musical-theatre path.

Shaun Dooley and Hades

Shaun Dooley will play Hades, while Danielle De Niese takes Persephone, Fayth Ifil takes Eurydice, Malinda Parris takes Hermes, and Nathan Sykes takes Orpheus. The production is not simply swapping one name at the top of the poster; it is changing the central quartet that carries the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, and of Hades and Persephone.

Dooley’s stage work includes Hills of California, directed by Sam Mendes, but the rest of his profile is led by screen credits. That split is the point of interest here. In a role like Hades, the production is betting that a screen-heavy performer can carry the vocal and dramatic load of a London stage run without relying on a prior musical persona.

Danielle De Niese and Fayth Ifil

Danielle De Niese arrives with an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera won earlier this year, which gives the cast a performer already recognized at award level. Fayth Ifil brings a different kind of currency: she first debuted on the West End aged 10 years old and has since played leading West End roles in Tina – The Tina Turner Musical and Just For One Day.

Malinda Parris adds another substantial stage résumé, with credits including The Greatest Showman, Hercules, & Juliet, Little Big Things, Mary Poppins, Matilda, Caroline, or Change, The Light Princess, and Parade. Nathan Sykes, known as a member of The Wanted before his solo career, completes the lead line-up as Orpheus, giving the company a mix of opera, youth-stage pedigree, mainstream pop, and musical-theatre experience.

London company from 2026

The new cast will also include Melanie Bright, Spike Maxwell, and Lauran Rae as the Fates; Femi Akinfolarin, Michelle Andrews, Gabriela Benedetti, Ollie Bingham, and Sebastian Lim-Seet as the Workers; and Juan Jackson, Oisín Nolan-Power, Lindo Shinda, Jasmine Triadi, and Milly Willows as Swings. For a London production, that is a full-company reset, not a cosmetic adjustment.

Hadestown has music, lyrics, and book by Anaïs Mitchell, with Rachel Chavkin as the artistic collaborator and director associated with the show. The production is produced in London by Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, Tom Kirdahy, and The National Theatre in association with JAS Theatricals, and the 15 September 2026 start date gives the company a clean handover point. Readers tracking tickets or cast-specific visits now know the exact date when the new ensemble takes over.
