Lamine Yamal marked his 19th birthday with a low-key but busy day before Spain's World Cup semi-final against France. He trained in the morning, had a kickabout with his mates, attended a show and then turned up for a pre-match press conference.
For a player already used to major occasions, the timing of this birthday only added to the spotlight. Spain were preparing for one of the biggest matches of the tournament, and Yamal remained central to the discussion. He said the present he wanted most was simple: a win.
Birthday mood, but no distractions
Yamal was direct when asked about the occasion. He said there was no pressure, answering, “Pressure? No.” He also made clear that his focus was on the match rather than the celebration.
That fits the way he has carried himself at this World Cup. So far, Yamal has scored only one goal, but Spain continue to see him as one of their key attacking threats. Luis de la Fuente even suggested that Yamal's best day at the tournament was still to come, saying, “He’s 19, madre mia.”
A familiar opponent
France is not new territory for Yamal. At 16, he scored against France. At 17, he scored against France again. That history gives this semi-final an added edge, even if Yamal is keeping the focus on the present.
He also joked about what he would want next, saying, “A trip to New York.” But the immediate priority is clear. Spain want to reach the final, and Yamal wants his birthday remembered for the right reason.
