Lindsay Foreman has lost more than 14kg during an eight-week hunger strike while the detained British Iranian couple remain in Iran, according to her family. Craig Foreman has refused food for nine weeks, and the family says both have been denied medical care and supplies.
Lindsay Foreman is reported to be suffering severe vertigo, tremors and profound physical weakness, with Hrana saying she is now dangerously weak. Craig Foreman has lost about 16kg. The family says the couple have been cut off from their children and loved ones while their condition worsens.
British Embassy in Tehran supplies
The family says medication, glasses, books and basic hygiene products sent by the British Embassy in Tehran were withheld. The family also says that withholding those items broke a formal guarantee previously given to the British ambassador. That leaves the couple dependent on prison access that has not matched the support their family says was arranged for them.
Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said the Foremans' health and welfare was its priority. Britain’s Ambassador to Tehran, diplomats and officials in London have been working to provide consular assistance since the couple’s arrest last year. Joe Bennett, Lindsay Foreman’s son, is set to go to Parliament on Wednesday to meet with MPs about the couple’s situation.
Bennett said the couple are “starving themselves because every other route has been closed to them”. The family urged the UK government to act without delay to get medical access and supplies to the pair and to secure their release. The immediate test is whether the medical access and basic items that were withheld can be restored before the hunger strikes cut the couple further down.
