An Extreme Heat Warning took effect for the core of the Philadelphia area on Wednesday at 10 a.m. and was set to last until 8 p.m. Heat index values were expected to reach 100 degrees, and SEPTA and Amtrak moved to heat protocols as trains could be forced to run more slowly.
Amtrak told customers delays could run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, while SEPTA said Regional Rail riders may also face delays. For riders, that means the warning was not just a weather alert; it carried a timetable for slower service during the middle of the day.
Philadelphia area on Wednesday
The warning arrived as people were still outside at FIFA Fan Fest at Lemon Hill for the World Cup semi-final matchup between England and Argentina. The festival had misters, fans, and water bottle filling stations in place, and its free concert series was scheduled to continue with Canadian DJ and producer deadmou5 and Bebe Rexha.
That same pressure showed up before sunrise along Kelly Drive, where runners tried to beat the heat. Liam Cullen said he started earlier to get out before the sun and ran an easy six-mile loop around Philly. “Today, just started a little bit earlier. Trying to get out before the heat -- the sun comes up. So, you know, just an easy six-mile loop around Philly, up the Schuylkill trail, up to the top of the Oval here, and then just right back down. A little slower though,” he said.
Bernadette Fulweiler in Fairmount
Bernadette Fulweiler said the humidity pushed her group out earlier than usual. “It's super humid so we usually go out a little closer to five, but because of the humidity went out around 4:45 today. It's to the point where you almost just have to walk- it's just so hot. The air is thick. Definitely not my best run- that's for sure,” she said. Her run came as the warning covered the Philadelphia area even while people kept moving through outdoor plans.
The warning ended at 8 p.m. Wednesday, but Amtrak said its delay window stretched through Friday between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. The practical choice for people using SEPTA Regional Rail, riding Amtrak, or spending the day at FIFA Fan Fest was the same: expect slower movement through the hottest part of the day and plan around it.
