That public praise turns Shirley’s fraud claims into a broader political defense of citizen journalism. It also puts the fight over his reporting in plain view: Shirley says he exposed the fraudsters, the politicians and the media who worked for years to cover it up.
Security costs after the backlash
In April, Shirley said it was getting increasingly dangerous for him to stay at hotels because of constant doxxing and killing plots. In later posts, he said the response included death threats and false smears on his name, along with labels such as white supremacy, racist and fascist.
He said the cost has not been only reputational. By his account, staying safe now requires security and tens of thousands of dollars each month, a burden that shows how quickly a public fraud fight can spill into a private safety issue for the person doing the exposing.
Minnesota fraud and media scrutiny
Shirley said corruption is rampant in Minnesota and said he exposed a Somali-run daycare fraud there. He also said the mainstream media chose to investigate the person who exposed the fraud instead of the fraud itself, and called that response complicit in the cover-up.
He said he was labeled with politically charged terms and not treated as a journalist, even as he said he sought accountability from public representatives and leaders. Last year, he shared videos to draw attention to prominent figures on the right, and he said that work helped him build a large audience for reporting he believes people need to see.
