More than 40,000 tickets sold for Washington Spirit Vs Gotham at Citi Field as record crowd looms

The Washington Spirit and Gotham FC are set for a headline occasion at Citi Field on Wednesday night, with more than 40,000 tickets already sold and the match on course to challenge the record for the highest attendance at a women’s professional sporting event in New York City.

It is a major stage for the 2025 NWSL Championship rematch, but it is also being played in difficult conditions. Smoke from Canadian wildfires has been affecting air quality in the northeast of the U.S., while temperatures in New York City are expected to be around 100 degrees Fahrenheit, or 38C, before an 8 p.m. ET kickoff.

Heat, air quality and a big-city crowd

The NWSL updated its gameday heat safety policy in June, and the league has been monitoring the situation closely. On Tuesday, it took Wet Bulb Globe Temperature readings under conditions similar to those expected on Wednesday, while the NWSL also has specific AQI thresholds for hydration breaks, delay decisions and cancellation decisions.

That matters because this is not a routine midweek fixture. The combination of a large crowd, extreme heat and poor air quality makes the league’s planning as important as the football itself.

What the league and city are asking supporters to consider

Wednesday around 1:30 p.m. local time, Zohran Mamdani cautioned New Yorkers that the air quality had reached “unhealthy levels” in parts of the city and urged people to “avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.” That warning underlines the challenge facing anyone attending an event of this size, even one with the kind of appeal this matchup has generated.

Gotham, currently based in Harrison, New Jersey, have already announced a planned 2028 move to Etihad Park in Queens, so this is also a notable night for the club’s New York footprint. For now, though, the focus is on the game itself and the possibility that Gotham FC and the Washington Spirit will help deliver a landmark attendance for women’s sport in the city.

If the record does fall, it will be a reminder of how quickly interest around the NWSL can build when the stage, stakes and setting align. The bigger question on the night may simply be how well the match is able to cope with the conditions around it.
