Claudia Winkleman show exit is now official after she said she is quitting The Claudia Winkleman Show after one series. The chat show ran for seven episodes across seven weeks in the spring, then ended with Winkleman deciding she did not want to continue in the slot.
Winkleman said, “I was just too nervous to enjoy it,” and added that she was “incredibly grateful to the for giving me the opportunity, to the guests who agreed to come and chat to me, and the production team who were simply excellent.” She also said, “Sometimes you have to try something to see how it fits, and I realised I was just too nervous to enjoy it.”
Seven episodes on One
The Claudia Winkleman Show was made by So Television, the company co-founded by Graham Norton, and it aired in the Friday night One slot that Norton previously occupied. Most episodes drew an average combined audience of between 1.5 million and 2 million viewers, a solid enough reach for a new chat format but not the kind of breakout number that forces a quick recommission.
During its run, Winkleman interviewed Lisa Kudrow, Jeff Goldblum, Niall Horan and Rachel Zegler. Ralph Fiennes, James McAvoy, Jamie Dornan, Vanessa Williams and Josh Widdicombe were among the guests on the sofa, while her first guests were Jeff Goldblum, Jennifer Saunders, Vanessa Williams and Tom Allen.
Ed Havard backs the decision
Ed Havard said, “Claudia's warmth and quick wit made The Claudia Winkleman Show an absolute joy.” He added, “Whilst we loved the show, we fully respect her decision and would like to thank Claudia and the brilliant team at So Television for bringing the series to screen on the.”
The split response from critics explains why the programme never settled into an obvious must-keep position, with some calling it entertaining and full of banter and others calling it messy and a bit of a bore. That mixed reception, paired with Winkleman’s own nerves, makes this feel less like a blunt cancellation than a presenter choosing to step away from a format that never sat comfortably with her.
The Celebrity Traitors later
Ed Havard also said, “As the host of the country's most-watched show, Claudia will be back on the very soon when The Celebrity Traitors returns later this year, and we can't wait to see what she has in store for the new band of celebs.” Winkleman said, “Maybe one day I will give it another try, but for now I already have the best jobs in the world and absolutely love the shows I'm doing,” so the immediate business decision is clear: the chat show is off the board, while her role is not.
