This was not a disaster for Derry City, but it was a reminder that fine margins still matter at this level. A 3-2 defeat away to CSKA Sofia in the first leg of the Europa League first qualifying round tie leaves Tiernan Lynch’s side needing to overturn a one-goal deficit at the Brandywell, and the tie is very much still alive.
That is the key point here. Derry did not leave Sofia battered and buried. They left with a result that gives them a real chance in front of their own supporters on 16 July, even if the performance also showed why Lynch was so frustrated by the goals conceded. In a game like this, you cannot keep handing a side of CSKA’s quality the kind of openings that swing the tie.
A contest that kept shifting
Ioannis Pittas opened the scoring for CSKA Sofia before Liam Boyce brought Derry City level in the 31st minute. When Bruno Jardao restored CSKA’s lead on 53 minutes and Pittas struck again later on, the game began to look as though it might slip away from the Candystripes.
But James Olayinka’s goal with one minute to go changed the mood completely. It does not erase the defeat, and it certainly does not hide the defensive issues, but it does mean Derry go home with something to build on rather than a mountain to climb. That is not nothing in a European tie away from home.
Lynch can see the positives, but the concerns remain
Tiernan Lynch was clear afterwards that he thought Derry were much better in the second half. He said he was very disappointed with the goals they conceded, but felt his team got stronger as the game went on and insisted it is still all to play for. He also accepted that CSKA are a good side with good footballers who keep the ball well.
That assessment feels fair. Derry improved, but improvement alone will not be enough if they repeat the same defensive lapses in the second leg. The encouraging part is that they were still competitive deep into the game. The worrying part is that they still had to chase it because CSKA kept finding a way through.
So the job is simple enough to state, if not simple to achieve: Derry City must beat CSKA Sofia at the Brandywell on 16 July and turn a one-goal deficit into progress. The tie is alive, but it is alive because Derry kept themselves in it late. Now they need the same resilience, with more control, when the pressure shifts to home soil.
