Melissa Gilbert says Georgie McGill will not return to When Calls the Heart for season 14, and the reason she was given was budget issues. In an Instagram post, she told viewers that the decision closes the door on a recurring role she joined in Season 12.

“Many people have asked if I will be returning to When Calls the Heart this coming season,” Gilbert wrote. “The answer to that is no I will not.” She added, “I am told this is due to 'budget issues.'”
Gilbert also wrote, “That said, I wish all my sweet friends in Hope Valley a wonderful and successful season 14.” For viewers who followed Georgie McGill’s run, that leaves the character out of the cast as the show moves toward its next season.
Season 12 to season 14
Season 12 brought Gilbert in as Georgie McGill, a former Mountie forensic investigator with a romantic history with Bill Avery. The role put her back into the frontier-drama lane that made her a household name on Little House on the Prairie, and the Georgie and Bill pairing became a mature romance that drew attention beyond a standard guest turn.
Jack Wagner plays Bill Avery, which made the character pairing one of the show’s more visible running story lines. Gilbert said the romance gave her “butterflies” in her 60s, a blunt way of saying the part still offered her something she had not already done elsewhere.
Budget issues, not the headline speculation
Some viewers questioned whether the exit had anything to do with Timothy Busfield’s legal case, but neither Gilbert nor the show has suggested a connection. Busfield was indicted in New Mexico on four counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor, has denied the allegations, and pleaded not guilty; he is scheduled to stand trial in May 2027.
Gilbert said during the legal proceedings that she needed to step away and “lean into that truth fully” as her family navigated the situation, and she later returned to work as chief creative officer of Modern Prairie. For now, the practical reading is simple: Georgie McGill is out for season 14, and the show’s return in 2027 will have to move forward without the storyline that came with her.
