Lauren Laverne said on Instagram that she has been diagnosed with smouldering myeloma, an asymptomatic blood and bone marrow disorder. She said at the moment she feels OK and does not need treatment.
The presenter said the condition can develop into blood cancer in some people, but that the risk in her case is pretty low. She said she will be monitored with blood tests, MRIs and bone marrow biopsies.

Laverne said most people her age who have smouldering myeloma have no idea they have it, and that it tends to be cancer survivors like her who are diagnosed early because they are carefully monitored. Her post came after she said in August 2024 that she had been diagnosed with cancer and was recovering in hospital, before being given the all clear in November 2024.

She said the new diagnosis has nothing to do with her previous illness or her recent surgery. Laverne also said there is no cure for the condition and that her immune system is a bit compromised.
She added that she has had some difficult experiences in the last eight years and has learned more from those experiences than some people do in a lifetime. Jessie Ware replied, “Sending you all the love. Thank you for sharing.”
For Laverne, the practical next step is continued monitoring rather than immediate treatment. The open question is whether future blood tests, MRIs and bone marrow biopsies show any change in the condition.
