Sometimes recruitment is about inspiration. Sometimes it is about urgency. In Falkirk's case, Ryan Strain looks very much like the latter — and that is not a criticism. It is reality.
The 29-year-old has arrived on a free transfer after his Dundee United contract expired at the end of last season, giving John McGlynn a familiar Scottish Premiership option at exactly the moment Falkirk needed one. With Keelan Adams recovering from surgery and Jack McMillan injured, the gap at right-back was no longer a theoretical problem. It was an obvious one.
A sensible move rather than a glamorous one
There is a temptation to dress up every signing as some grand statement of intent. This one does not need that treatment. It is practical, direct and, most importantly, timely. McGlynn made no secret of why the move was necessary, pointing to Adams' operation and roughly another nine weeks of recovery, provided there are no setbacks, while also noting that McMillan is unavailable too.
That is the sort of injury picture that forces a club to act rather than wait. Falkirk did exactly that. They have brought in a player described by McGlynn as a proven Premiership performer who has delivered consistently for both St Mirren and Dundee United, and who knows the league well enough to come in and make an immediate impact.
That matters. There is no hidden learning curve here, no long bedding-in period to pretend away the obvious. Strain is a familiar figure in the Scottish Premiership, and that experience should count for a great deal when a team needs reliability more than romance.
What Falkirk are buying
McGlynn's praise was revealing in a good way. He called Strain accomplished both defensively and going forward, highlighted his energy and his use of the ball, and pointed to the added attacking threat he can provide down the right side. In other words, this is not just an emergency body. It is a proper full-back with enough quality to improve the squad beyond the current injury crisis.
That is the key distinction. Plenty of clubs make signings because they have to. The better clubs make the kind that also make sense once the crisis passes. If Strain gives Falkirk cover now and genuine competition later, the move suddenly looks smarter than simple damage limitation.
At 29, he is not a project. He is not a gamble. He is an experienced professional who has already done the job in the Scottish Premiership and now has a chance to do it again for a side that needs stability in that area of the pitch. That is exactly why the deal works.
Falkirk did not need headlines here. They needed a solution. Ryan Strain gives them one.
