Philadelphia Union have brought Kai Wagner back to the club, finalizing an acquisition from Birmingham City F.C. on July 17 that restores one of the most productive players in team history to the roster. The deal runs through the 2028-2029 season and includes an option for 2029-2030, with the move also involving $100,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money and a 2026 international roster spot.

Wagner’s return is notable because he is not just another familiar face. During his first seven seasons with Philadelphia Union, the defender made 204 regular-season appearances, scored eight goals and set a club record with 63 assists. He is also a three-time MLS All-Star and two-time MLS Best XI selection, and Philadelphia Union describes him as the club’s all-time assist leader.

The club said his addition to the active roster depends on receipt of his International Transfer Certificate. That detail matters because Wagner spent the past seven months in England’s EFL Championship with Birmingham City F.C. before making his way back to Philadelphia.

What Wagner brings back to the Union

Philadelphia Union are getting back a player who already has a long track record of impact in the club’s biggest moments. The team says Wagner helped secure two Supporters’ Shields and reach an MLS Cup Final, and his 2025 season showed he was still operating at a high level before leaving. He logged a team-high 2,769 minutes, collected 90 key passes, delivered 160 corner kicks and completed 88 successful crosses while helping Philadelphia Union win its second MLS Supporters’ Shield.

That mix of durability, chance creation and experience is why the move feels like more than a simple reunion. Wagner gives Philadelphia Union a proven left back with a deep understanding of the club’s standards and expectations, and the front office made clear it expects him to help right away.

Why the timing matters

The return comes just ahead of a busy stretch for Philadelphia Union, who are set to host Red Bull New York for Rivalry Night at Subaru Park on Wednesday, July 22, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. Even before Wagner takes the field, his arrival adds a familiar piece to a roster that is trying to push forward in the second half of the season.

Jon Scheer said the club is thrilled to welcome Wagner back and called him an integral part of Philadelphia Union’s success. Wagner said the decision to return was deeply personal, adding that coming back to Philadelphia feels meaningful for him and his family and that the city has become home. After seven months away, he is back with the club where he made his name, and Philadelphia Union is banking on that history translating into another strong chapter.
