Firefighters were working Friday evening to put out a massive blaze at Helix Apartments in St. Louis Park. Flames were shooting out of the roof at 7500 Hwy. 7 by around 5:30 p.m., after crews first responded to a report of smoke at 4:47 p.m.

Aerial video showed that a large part of the site had been heavily damaged. No injuries had been reported as of early Friday evening, and The Salvation Army was called to help displaced residents.
Built in 1985
The Helix Apartments were built in 1985 and were extensively renovated between 2020 and 2022. That older structure, followed by a recent renovation, leaves investigators with two practical questions to sort through: where the fire started and how it moved fast enough to reach the roof.
Cause at Helix Apartments
Investigators will look into the cause of the fire. For residents, the immediate issue is finding out where they can get help through The Salvation Army and what parts of the complex remain usable after the heavy damage.
