Andy Beshear details two calls in Is Mitch Mcconnell Alive inquiry

Andy Beshear said two calls he received raised the question of Is Mitch McConnell alive after weeks of silence from the senator’s office. He said the calls came from different agencies that were not state agencies, and that one reason the speculation spread was the lack of a formal update.

Beshear made the remarks in an interview with Katie Couric published on YouTube on July 15. He said, “It had been a month before anything had been put out, not even an official statement from Senator McConnell” and, “In fact, I’d gotten two calls from different agencies—not state agencies—suggesting he’s passed.”

Earlier in July

Beshear said he had asked Mitch McConnell’s office for a formal update earlier in July. McConnell was found unconscious in his Washington residence and rushed to the hospital on June 14, then remained out of public view for weeks while his office did not explain the extended hospitalization or elaborate on his return to Capitol Hill.

On Sunday, McConnell’s office shared a photo showing him sitting upright in a chair beside his wife. The image showed him holding a copy of The Washington Post’s Sunday sports section in his lap. Far-right influencers claimed the picture was AI-generated, but forensic analysis teams concluded that the image was real and not AI-generated.

Beshear said Tuesday that the fastest way to end the speculation would be a call into a news station or a video statement. He said, “We hope that there is a speedy recovery” and added, “But with all the speculation—and there’s been a ton—the fastest way to end all of it is calling into a news station if you’re otherwise taking calls, putting out a video or two, which all of us do in office.”

McConnell’s team had not provided any further explanation or evidence supporting his improving health condition since Sunday. The unanswered issue now is what medical condition or circumstance kept the 84-year-old hospitalized for so long, and Beshear’s comments show how quickly the silence turned into a wider question about the senator’s status.
