Hamilton had already shown enough to suggest there was pace in the car. He first logged a 1m 47.436s on Pirelli’s soft tyre, then improved to 1m 46.789s. That was enough to keep Ferrari in the conversation, even if Kimi Antonelli later went to the top with a 1m 45.990s. But all of that was almost beside the point once Hamilton ended his session in the barriers on his final lap.
Ferrari’s qualifying headache
That crash left Ferrari facing a race against time to repair Hamilton’s damaged car before qualifying later on Saturday. And this is where the pressure gets properly real. It is one thing to chase lap time. It is another to chase the sort of repair job that has to be done without mistake, without drama and without the luxury of extra seconds.
The session itself had already developed that slightly uneasy practice-day feel. At 1230 local time, the light went green at the end of the pit lane, and by the approach to the 20-minute mark most of the field was out on track. The conditions were there, the laps were there, and the benchmark times were there. But Hamilton’s crash changed the tone immediately.
That is the harsh edge of qualifying weekend preparation: a car can go from competitive to compromised in one moment. Ferrari do not need reminding how fragile these sessions are, especially when a driver has already shown decent speed and then hands the team an urgent repair bill right before the money session.
There is also the wider backdrop of a field that was already feeling finely balanced. Isack Hadjar’s remark that “nothing is ready, everything is too cold” captured the mood well enough. The margins were tight, the track was evolving, and the timing of Hamilton’s incident could hardly have been worse for Ferrari.
So yes, the headline number from Free Practice 3 is Antonelli’s 1m 45.990s. But the bigger reality is simpler and far less comfortable for Ferrari: the team was suddenly in a qualifying time crisis of its own making, with Hamilton’s car needing to be put back together before the session that actually counts.
