That is the kind of move clubs make when they are tired of looking ordinary. After back-to-back Premier League campaigns that fell well short of what Tottenham should be, this summer has been treated like a clean break rather than a cautious adjustment. The spending alone tells you that. So does the timing. De Zerbi arrived, assessed the problem, and immediately changed the structure in the middle of the pitch.
It is easy to see why. A double pivot gives Tottenham control, balance and a better platform to play through pressure. It also gives Tonali and Fernandes a clear responsibility rather than asking them to rescue a team that has been built in fragments. If you are going to spend this kind of money, you would hope there is at least a coherent plan behind it. In this case, there appears to be one.
Why Tottenham have changed the equation
The signing of Tonali and Fernandes is about more than talent. It is about fixing a team that has lacked enough authority in the middle and too often looked stretched when matches turned ugly. De Zerbi has moved quickly to address that, and the message is obvious: Tottenham are done pretending that midfield can be an afterthought.
That does not mean the job is finished. Far from it. The club still need more work in forward areas, and that matters. You can spend £185million and still leave gaps elsewhere if the squad is not properly rounded. But this is still a major shift in ambition. Tottenham have invested heavily in two players who should shape the way they control matches, not merely decorate them.
And that is why the De Zerbi effect matters here. He has not just changed the tactical shape. He has changed the mood. Seven games into his spell last term, Tottenham even recorded a 2-1 away win against Aston Villa on May 3, and that felt like a sign that the team was beginning to look more purposeful. The summer rebuild has taken that idea and pushed it much further.
Of course, money does not win arguments on its own. Tottenham still have to prove that this midfield reset can translate into something more durable across a full season. But for once, the club are acting like they understand the scale of the problem. £185million on Tonali and Fernandes is not subtle. It is Tottenham trying to stop behaving like a side that accepts mediocrity.
The question now is whether this rebuild gives them the control they have been missing. On paper, it looks like a serious start. On the pitch, it has to become much more than that.
