Ten people were hurt in a Tucson shooting near 6th Avenue and Congress Street early Sunday morning. Police shot the suspect after hearing gunshots and finding him running away. Officers then took him into custody and Tucson Fire crews took him to a hospital.
The suspect was last listed in life-threatening condition. Nine other people suffered critical gunshot wounds to their arms or legs.
6th Avenue and Congress Street
Police responded around 2 a.m. in downtown Tucson. 6th Avenue is closed between Pennington Street and Broadway Boulevard, and Congress Street is closed between Scott and Toole avenues.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Tucson police will conduct a separate internal review to determine whether any department policies were violated, and the findings will be sent to the Pima County Attorney’s Office.
Saturday in the Valley
The Tucson case comes after two officer-involved shootings were reported Saturday in the Valley. One involved Chandler police at a Tempe apartment complex, and another involved Mesa police and a homicide suspect. This is the 10th officer-involved shooting in the Tucson area that Arizona’s Family has reported on this year and the 52nd statewide.
The immediate question for people in the downtown area is the same one investigators now have to answer: what led police to fire, and what led the suspect to run as gunshots were heard nearby. Until that review is complete, the closures and the medical condition of the suspect remain part of the live public record.
