The Odyssey movie by Christopher Nolan is heading to a $120 million-plus domestic opening and a projected $257.8 million global weekend, a result that would reset the scale of the filmmaker’s launch business. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, and Universal Pictures is already dealing with a debut that is running far ahead of its own domestic target.
Matt Damon and $51.2 million
The film earned $51.2 million on Friday from 3,900 North American screens, including Thursday previews, putting it on track for the kind of opening that only a handful of recent releases can match. It is also projected to be 2026’s biggest live-action opening and the year’s top R-rated launch, with Universal expecting its highest weekend for an R-rated title.
That pace puts the movie in a different bracket from the studio’s earlier domestic plan. Universal had been aiming for a mid-$80 million to $100 million opening, yet the current run suggests the film will clear that range by a wide margin before the weekend is done.
IMAX and $30 million
The film’s rollout has leaned hard on premium formats, and the numbers show it. It marks the first feature shot entirely on IMAX cameras, with an estimated $30 million coming from IMAX screens domestically and another $22 million from IMAX showings internationally.
That format mix helps explain why the weekend is scaling so fast. With 73 international markets projected to deliver $137.3 million, the title is set to become Christopher Nolan’s biggest global opening and his biggest opening outside the Batman franchise, while also giving Universal a launch that sits well above its usual summer floor for this kind of release.
The Dark Knight Rises and Oppenheimer
The comparison point inside Nolan’s career is sharp. The Dark Knight Rises opened to $160 million domestically in 2012, The Dark Knight opened to $158 million in 2008, and Oppenheimer opened to $82.4 million domestically in July 2023 before going on to collect $975 million worldwide and seven Academy Awards, including best picture and Nolan’s first best director Oscar.
The Odyssey is now positioned to land as Nolan’s third-biggest domestic opening, but its global launch is the bigger story because the projected $257.8 million would move it ahead of every prior opening weekend in his filmography. Whether the final domestic total finishes above the $120 million-plus mark is the last number left on the board.
Rotten Tomatoes at 95 percent
A 95 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 97 percent audience score give the film a stronger reception profile than most event releases can claim in their first weekend. David Rooney reviewed the film for The Hollywood Reporter, and the positive response has only increased the likelihood that premium-format demand carries through the rest of the run.
For Universal Pictures, the immediate test is simple: turn a production that cost $250 million into a launch that can sustain momentum after this weekend’s rush. For Nolan, the opening is already doing the one thing his previous records could not do at this scale — stretch his box-office ceiling beyond the Batman films.
