Pat Riley has made it clear the Miami Heat are not finished after landing Giannis Antetokounmpo. On Thursday, the Heat president said there was “another one we have to land,” and identified that player as LeBron James.
The timing made the remark even more notable. Riley was introducing Antetokounmpo in Miami on the same day James was in the middle of another wave of speculation, with the veteran star still not giving a formal answer on his next move.
Riley was direct when asked about the Heat’s pursuit.
“We have a deal,” he said. “There’s another one we have to land.”
That is the sort of line that turns a routine update into a bigger statement of intent. Miami have already added one elite name, but Riley’s comments suggested the organization is still looking higher up the ladder, with James firmly in the picture.
Riley keeps the Heat’s ambition in view
Riley did not dress up the situation as anything more complicated than it is. The Heat want talent, and he has never been shy about saying that championship teams need star power to be complete.
“That definitely helps when you have a top-five player in the world,” he said, before adding that a move for the 24-year veteran would have to happen “organically.”
He also set out the broader logic behind Miami’s approach. “You never know that you’re ever going to win a title until you win one, but you’ll never win one if you don’t have the talent and the coaching to do it,” Riley said.
From there, he pointed back to the group already in place. “From that standpoint, this is a team that we have right now, and I’m happy with it. And I think this is Spo’s challenge,” he said.
James still has not given Miami an answer
The other side of the story is that James has still not made his move public. Earlier this offseason, he announced that he would play in the 2026-27 season but would not return to the Lakers, and his name has been in the mix for six teams.
On Thursday afternoon at Fanatics Fest in New York, James did not announce a decision during his Mind the Game podcast taping. Later on Thursday at the CNBC/Boardroom Game Plan event, he said his decision would be coming soon.
Riley admitted Miami are still waiting. “To be transparent about it, we’ve had discussions over a week ago, maybe a week before that about it, but right now, I think we’re like everybody else. We’re just waiting to see what he does, and then we’ll see what happens. I really can’t answer that right now,” he said.
That leaves the Heat in a familiar place: aggressive, ambitious, and still watching a major name decide his next step. Riley’s message was not that the pursuit is over. It was that Miami are still in it, and still believe there is another big piece to chase.
