The New York Jets have made their stance on Quentin Skinner painfully clear. On Monday, July 13, Aaron Wilson reported that the wide receiver was waived from injured reserve, closing the book on a second separation between the two sides in roughly five weeks.
That matters because this was not just a routine roster paper move. Skinner had already been waived by the Jets on June 8 with an injury designation, then cleared waivers and reverted to the team’s injured reserve. In theory, that path could have kept him in place for the entire 2026 season while he rehabbed and collected a paycheck. In reality, the Jets have now ended that route and left him available to sign elsewhere as an unrestricted free agent after the injury settlement.
A second exit tells the real story
When a team parts ways with a player once, it can be an awkward footnote. When it happens again after the player has already cycled through injured reserve, the message is a lot less subtle. The Jets were never building around Skinner, and Monday’s move makes that impossible to miss.
Skinner is listed as a 24-year-old wide receiver who will be 25 during the 2026 season, at 6-foot-5 and 195 pounds. That frame gives him a natural talking point, because size always tempts teams to keep looking for a role. But the Jets have chosen the simpler route: move on and let someone else decide whether there is something worth developing.
What the Jets gain by moving on
There is a practical side to this, too. Teams do not hand out injured reserve spots forever when a player is no longer part of the plan. If Skinner had stayed on injured reserve, he would have remained attached to the Jets. Instead, the club has cleared the deck and created room to focus on the names that actually matter in this roster conversation.
And those names are not hard to find. The Jets have bigger fish to fry with Sauce Gardner, Quinnen Williams, Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall occupying far more important places in the public conversation. That is exactly why a move like Skinner’s is easy to overlook, even though it still says something about how ruthless roster management can be in the NFL.
There is nothing dramatic about a waiver report on its own. But there is a blunt little truth underneath this one: the Jets had two chances to keep Quentin Skinner in the building, and they have now walked away twice. That is usually the clearest verdict of all.
