Facebook and Instagram were hit by a major Meta outage that left users facing an "Account Temporarily Unavailable" message on their screens. Thousands of users on computers could not move past the error before service was restored.
UK Reports on Downdetector
Downdetector recorded over 5,000 reports for Facebook in the UK and over 1,000 reports for Instagram in the UK during the outage. The scale points to a broad service failure rather than a brief local glitch.
Users also posted screenshots of the message on X. One user said Facebook worked fine on their cellphone but showed an error message on a laptop in Safari and Chrome.
Facebook and Instagram Users Abroad
Reports also came in from the US, Argentina, Brazil, Germany and other countries. Downdetector received thousands of outage reports from those markets, and the issue was believed to have affected over a million users collectively.
The outage message said, "Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue." It also said, "We expect this to be resolved shortly," and, "Please try again in a few minutes."
Service Returned to Normal
After the issues were sorted, service for both Facebook and Instagram returned to normal. The open question is what caused the Meta outage, because the symptom was visible across computers and several countries before it cleared.
