Josh Mauro snorted cocaine and spent his final hours drinking tequila with several women before he died of an accidental overdose earlier this year. A Phoenix Police Department case report and an autopsy from the Maricopa County Medical Examiner turned a vague end-of-life timeline into a sequence that now points to multiple substances, not one isolated event.
Mid-April is where the timeline starts: Mauro met a dancer about one week before his death, then invited her, a friend and two other women to his Arizona home in the early morning hours of April 23. The case report says Mauro and his friend began snorting cocaine when they arrived, and that all of them started drinking tequila and listening to music.

After a few hours, the women went to an upstairs bedroom to sleep while Mauro and his friend “continued to hang out downstairs.” The dancer later awoke and found Mauro alone and apparently dead on the floor, then immediately called emergency services and tried to revive him. That sequence matters because it places the reported cocaine use, alcohol use and the later death in the same narrow window rather than leaving the final hours abstract.
The dancer also described Joshua as being happy and a sweetheart before the incident, which gives the report a sharper contrast than a simple toxicology summary. She said he “mentioned he was on a bender for 4 days,” and that he “would get frequent nosebleeds and would sweat after snorting cocaine.”

A bottle cap with a white substance, a white powdery substance near a rolled-up dollar bill, an abundant number of tissues with apparent blood on them and a syringe in a trash can were found near Mauro's body. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner said Mauro had traces of fentanyl, cocaine, ethanol, cannabinoids and caffeine in his system, and ruled his death an accidental overdose.
Mauro, who was 35 years old, played one season for the Giants in an eight-year NFL career. The case report does not answer the last link in the chain: what exact combination of substances and timing pushed the night from reported use to a fatal overdose.
