Ava Bunn Leads Scrubs Cast Shift for Season 2

ABC’s scrubs cast for Season 2 now centers on Ava Bunn, who has been promoted to series regular while Joel Kim Booster and X Mayo are out of the returning lineup. The move locks in the revival’s next phase before cameras move forward, with the core trio still intact and several recurring players set to carry over.

Ava Bunn Moves Up

Bunn’s promotion is the cleanest sign of where the series wants to spend its time next season. She came in as part of the group of new interns introduced as recurring players last season, and that jump from recurring to series regular usually means a larger role in the weekly engine of the show.

Zach Braff, Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke are all returning as series regulars, so the revival’s center remains fixed. That gives the season a stable base while the cast around it shifts, which is often how a show makes room for new storylines without rebuilding its whole identity.

Neil Flynn and Rachel Bilson

Neil Flynn and Rachel Bilson are also set to recur in Season 2, and Bilson will appear in a multi-episode arc as Charlie. Flynn was only in the Season 1 finale for a couple of scenes, so his move into the new season gives the revival more room to use him after a very limited first pass.

Aseem Batra said in April, “This isn’t a show about the kids, but the audience is curious about their family life and home life, and so we do want to show a little bit of that as well,” and also said, “The Rachel Bilson arc is going to also help us, because it’s like, what feelings does that kick up for Elliot, for J.D., so we’re really excited to have her back,”. That points to a Season 2 plan built around how the revival’s younger characters and returning doctors intersect, not just around nostalgia for the first eight seasons.

Dr. Park and Raymond

Joel Kim Booster and X Mayo are not returning as Dr. Park and Charge Nurse Raymond, which removes two prominent recurring characters described as breakout roles. John C. McGinley and Judy Reyes will still recur, along with Robert Maschio, Vanessa Bayer and Michael James Scott, so the season keeps depth in the supporting ranks even as it trims two names from the roster.

Jacob Dudman, David Gridley, Layla Mohammadi and Amanda Morrow will continue to recur next season, and that matters because the show is choosing continuity in the parts of the ensemble that already have momentum. Andy Ridings is not listed for Season 2, which sharpens the cut between who is being carried forward and who is being left behind.

The practical read on Season 2 is simple: Bunn is moving into a larger role, Flynn and Bilson are being used to widen the show’s reach, and the departures of Dr. Park and Charge Nurse Raymond make room for that rebalancing. The unresolved piece is which Season 2 storylines will now absorb the space they leave behind, especially if the revival wants to keep the family-life thread Batra described without losing its hospital rhythm.
