LA Galaxy agreed to a transfer for Kyōgo Furuhashi from Birmingham City on July 21, 2026, with the move set to run through the 2030-31 season once his P-1 Visa is received.
The 31-year-old forward gives LA Galaxy another experienced attacking option and an international roster player for the long term. The deal was announced as an agreed transfer, so the move is not fully complete until the visa process is finished, but the club has already made clear it is adding Furuhashi to its plans.
What Kyogo brings
Furuhashi arrives with a broad European and international résumé. LA Galaxy sporting director Will Kuntz said the club is excited to welcome Kyōgo to LA Galaxy and Los Angeles, and described him as a player with experience for the Japan National Team, in the UEFA Champions League, and in some of the best domestic leagues in Europe.
That experience matters because Furuhashi has produced in several different settings. He previously played for Celtic, where he scored 85 goals and added 19 assists in 165 appearances. He also played in the UEFA Europa League and was part of a domestic treble-winning campaign.
His best stretch came in 2022/23, when he tallied 34 goals in all competitions and won both the Scottish Premiership Player of the Year and the Golden Boot. Before that, he joined Vissel Kobe in 2018, made his senior debut for the Japan National Team in 2019, and helped Vissel Kobe capture the Emperor’s Cup and Japanese Super Cup in 2020. In 2021, he scored 15 league goals in 21 appearances.
Recent club form
Furuhashi’s more recent club production has been quieter. He spent the second half of the 2024/25 campaign with Stade Rennais and made six appearances after joining from Celtic. In 2025/26, he recorded three goals in 31 appearances for Birmingham City.
Even with those recent numbers, LA Galaxy is clearly betting on the wider body of work. Kuntz said the club is thrilled to add a player of Furuhashi’s caliber, goal scoring ability, and diverse experience, and expects him to make an impact on and off the field.
For LA Galaxy, the appeal is straightforward: a forward with a track record of production, major international experience, and a contract that stretches deep into the next decade. For Furuhashi, it is another chance to make a mark in a new league after stops in Japan, Scotland, France, and England.
