Elizabeth Rider is returning to Coronation Street this summer in a new role, 20 years after her last appearance on the soap. For viewers who remember her earlier run, the twist is that she is not coming back as Kathleen Gutteridge.
Rider last appeared in 2006, when she played a social worker helping Les Battersby-Brown adopt his stepson, Chesney. Her first Coronation Street spell ran from August 1999 to October 1999, when she played Ashley Peacock's mother.

That earlier role matters because it tied Rider to one of Coronation Street's better-known family threads. Kathleen Gutteridge and Ashley reconciled after she abandoned him at birth, giving the return a built-in point of recognition even though the new part has not been named.
Ashley, played by Steven Arnold, later died in a tram crash during the show's 50th-anniversary episode in December 2010. Bringing Rider back in a different role avoids locking the show into that old history, and it gives Coronation Street room to use her without reopening a closed character line.

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX, so the role should land in the summer run where the show can use a familiar face without promising a direct continuation of her 1999 or 2006 storylines.
