Roger Pielke Jr. says pollution cuts are not a direct short-term fix for Europe’s heat waves. In his second Substack post, he argues that climate change there comes from interacting factors, including the post-1980 decline in air pollution.
Europe and pollution since 1980
Pielke said atmospheric circulation generates a heat wave, while dry soils, brightened skies, warmer upwind seas, and city surfaces make it hotter. He also said greenhouse gases raise the energy in the climate system but do not cause the weather.
He wrote that cleaner air may have driven a large part of Europe’s rapid summer warming since 1980. Falling sulfate pollution, he said, added about half a degree of regional warming.
World Weather Attribution and Pielke
Pielke quoted World Weather Attribution as saying scientists can now “predict how heat waves will grow more frequent and intense unless emissions are cut drastically.” He also quoted David Faranda saying, “The only sustainable solution is to stop burning fossil fuels and reduce emissions.” António Guterres, in the same post, said, “To tackle the root cause, countries must phase out fossil fuels — fast and fairly.”
The argument runs against the common policy line that cutting carbon dioxide will quickly reduce extreme heat. Pielke said cutting carbon dioxide acts on one input only and slowly, while soil moisture, jet-stream patterns, and the heat already stored in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic do not respond to an emissions cut the way a room responds to a thermostat.
Schumacher et al. 2024
Pielke cited Schumacher et al. 2024 for the estimate that falling sulfate pollution added about half a degree of warming. He also cited Palazzo Corner et al. 2023 for projections that near-term warming from reducing aerosols can rival the warming avoided by cutting carbon dioxide itself.
The practical question left open is not whether Europe can cut emissions, but how fast any cooling signal would appear in heat-wave seasons after aerosol pollution falls. Pielke’s post points to a slower and less direct path than the policy slogans suggest, which is why the timing of any net-zero effect remains the issue that matters next.
