The Carolina Panthers were left with an immediate injury concern on Thursday when Nic Scourton was carted off during their first training camp practice after suffering an apparent lower body injury. For a second-year edge rusher who led the team with five sacks in the 2025 campaign, the timing made the moment especially worrying.
According to Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network, Scourton went down during team drills and had to leave the field on a cart. Wolfe also reported that trainers were looking at Scourton's right knee, although no official diagnosis has been given.
A difficult opening day for Carolina
Day 1 of camp is supposed to be about building rhythm, setting standards and getting a first look at the shape of the roster. Instead, the Panthers were dealing with a possible serious blow to a player who had already shown he can make a real difference on defense.
Scourton finished strongly last season and ended up as Carolina's sack leader with five. That is not an overwhelming total, but it was enough to underline his importance to a defense that needs disruption off the edge.
What the injury means for the Panthers
The immediate issue is not just Scourton's availability for the rest of camp. It is the uncertainty that comes with any apparent knee problem on the very first day of practice.
Wolfe said Scourton was in tears as the cart left the field, and the whole team came over to give him a hug. That reaction tells its own story: this was clearly a painful moment for the player and a difficult one for the group.
For now, the Panthers will be waiting for more information. Until there is an official diagnosis, there is no way to know how long Scourton could be sidelined. But on the opening day of camp, it was already a setback Carolina did not want.
