Randy Dobnak gave the Padres enough to deal with on Saturday, allowing one earned run on four hits and four walks while striking out three over 4.1 innings in a win.
The outing was a mixed one. Dobnak was effective enough to keep the damage limited, but the four walks showed his command was not crisp. He also finished with eight hard-hit balls, 11 whiffs and 96 pitches, which helps explain why the start was short despite the decent results on the scoreboard.
Season line and role change
After the game, Dobnak's season line stood at a 1.93 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in three appearances and one start. He will now take Stephen Kolek's place in the rotation and is lined up to face the Tigers next.
For Dobnak, the outing was another chance to show he can give the team usable innings when called upon. The run prevention has been strong so far, but the walks remain the main issue if he is going to hold down a rotation spot.
