Alex Scott is exactly the sort of player elite clubs circle when they smell an opportunity. He is only 22, he has already proved he can survive the jump into a tougher environment, and he has now turned down a new contract at Bournemouth. That is how attention starts, and in this case the attention comes from Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Utd.
For Bournemouth, this is not a surprise so much as a warning sign. Scott arrived in 2023 in a £25m move after 35 Championship starts for Bristol City in 2021/22 and 40 more in 2022/23. Pep Guardiola called him an "unbelievable player" and Jack Grealish has already described him as a "Top, top talent." The talent has never really been in doubt. The question has always been whether his body, his consistency and his next step would catch up with the hype.
A player who has grown up quickly
In his first Bournemouth campaign, Scott arrived with a knee problem and then suffered another injury early in his second season. That is the sort of start that can stall a young midfielder before he has properly begun. But last season he looked far more robust, missing only one game and playing 625 of a possible 630 minutes across seven key matches. That is not the profile of a fragile prospect. That is the profile of a player learning how to handle adult football.
There is a reason Bournemouth value him so highly under Andoni Iraola. Scott has moved beyond the idea of being merely a gifted runner with a nice reputation. The club have seen the physical development up close. Nigel Pearson once described him as a "scrawny-looking youngster" and said he was now "incredible," adding: "He has really filled out and matured as a player." That matters. At this level, the best technical players are only truly useful when they can stand up to the demands around them.
Why the big clubs are interested
Scott is still waiting on his first senior England cap, despite a first senior call-up in November and another invitation from Thomas Tuchel to join England's pre-World Cup training camp in June. Even so, the trend line is obvious. The talent is there, the physical growth is there and the ceiling is still high enough to make serious clubs think.
That is why Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Utd are watching. Bournemouth have done the difficult part: they have helped turn a highly rated teenager into a more complete Premier League midfielder. The uncomfortable part is that this often ends the same way for clubs outside the very top bracket. If a player like Scott keeps improving, the biggest sides begin asking whether they can buy the finished product before everyone else catches up.
For Bournemouth, that creates a familiar dilemma. Do they hold firm and try to build around a midfielder who is becoming more durable, more experienced and more attractive by the month? Or do they prepare for the possibility that another big move is coming? The answer may depend on how determined Scott is to stay. But the fact he has turned down a new contract tells you the pressure is already building.
Bournemouth Fc have every right to feel proud of the way Scott has developed. They also have every reason to feel uneasy. When Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Utd start circling, it usually means a club has produced something special. It also usually means the hard part is only just beginning.
