The Scottish Premiership has been forced into another awkward shuffle, and this one is not subtle. All five Scottish teams involved in European competitions have opted to postpone their league matches scheduled for Saturday, 22 August, which means the domestic calendar is now being bent around continental qualification again.
It is the sort of scheduling headache the Premiership knows all too well. These postponements are linked to European qualifying play-offs played over two legs around the same weekend, and the consequence is straightforward: the league fixtures that were due to take place on 22 August will now have to be squeezed into one of two midweek windows, either 8/9 September or 15/16 September.
The practical question is not hard to answer. Which Scottish Premiership matches were postponed? The ones involving the five clubs whose European commitments have taken priority. And given that Celtic and Rangers are guaranteed to reach the play-off stage in Europe, while Hearts, Motherwell and Hibernian still have qualification ties in progress, the logic behind the decision is obvious enough.
It is also a reminder that the Scottish Premiership is already living on a tightrope when Europe comes calling. Celtic know the cost of getting the timing wrong; last season they were beaten by Kairat Almaty at the Champions League play-off stage, and everyone around the competition understands why clubs would rather protect themselves from a brutal run of fixtures than pretend the strain does not exist.
There is a degree of common sense here, but there is also a cost. Fans buying into the rhythm of a league season are once again being asked to accept that the biggest clubs' European business can pull the whole schedule around with it. That may be unavoidable, but it is hardly elegant.
April 2025 already showed that a team playing in Europe could unilaterally delay a game. Now, with five Scottish teams making the same call on Saturday, 22 August, the scale of the issue looks even clearer. The football will be played eventually, probably in one of those September midweek slots, but the message is plain: in the Scottish Premiership, Europe still gets to set the terms.
