Lou Koller has died at 59 after a long fight against oesophageal cancer. The Sick Of It All frontman had been battling the illness for two years, and his bandmates said this year would have marked the band's 40th anniversary.
His bandmates announced the death on Instagram, saying, “It’s with unbelievable sadness that we announce to our worldwide hardcore family the passing of our brother Lou Koller. The level of loss that we feel at this time is overwhelming.” They also wrote that “Lou had the power to raise everyone’s spirits at our shows with a smile and a sarcastic comment, and he won people over wherever we played, from every culture and every corner of the world.”
May last year
In May last year, Koller said his initial treatment had been successful after he had taken to social media to say doctors had “found a tumour in my oesophagus that goes into my stomach.” That update gave the illness a clear timeline: an apparent early response to treatment, then a return of the cancer last September. For a band heading toward a 40th anniversary year, that sequence turned a public health fight into a prolonged interruption at the center of the group’s future.
Last September
His cancer returned last September, and the band later said donors had helped support Lou’s medical fund while he was battling away over the last two years. They thanked those supporters directly, saying, “At this time of intense grief, we must again acknowledge the great help and support offered by everyone who donated to Lou’s medical fund.”
“His battle is over now and he can finally rest,” the bandmates wrote. “Hopefully he can somehow still see and feel the beautiful, positive mark he left on the world.” That is the hard fact here: Sick Of It All loses its frontman just as the band was approaching a milestone year, and the people who helped fund his treatment are now left with a finished fight, not a renewed one.
