Pakistan Vs Sri Lanka: Fatima Sana wants fearless cricket as ODI series in Hambantota opens a key ICC Women's Championship battle

This is not just a three-match ODI series. It is a sharp little pressure test for Pakistan, and Fatima Sana knows it. Pakistan arrive in Hambantota second in the ICC Women's Championship standings, Sri Lanka are third, and the opening game on Thursday has a way of feeling bigger than the calendar would suggest.

That is the reality of this stretch of the season: every result matters, every patch of form matters, and every mistake gets dragged into the light. Fatima Sana has made the challenge plain enough. Pakistan want to keep their recent ODI form rolling, correct the flaws that have surfaced in their last two series, and keep building a unit that blends youth, experience and intent.

Pakistan are chasing more than a series win

There is a practical edge to this assignment as well. Pakistan swept Zimbabwe 3-0 in Karachi in May, and Fatima Sana also came through the ICC Women's T20 World Cup with 85 runs and 11 wickets, which is exactly the sort of all-round contribution a captain wants behind her when the questions start getting louder. But this is ODI cricket, not a highlight reel, and Hambantota will demand more than good intentions.

Fatima Sana has been clear about the message inside the camp: play attacking, fearless cricket, and do it in a way that matches modern ODI demands. That is the right idea. Pakistan have enough talent to look the part, but the real task is making that talent function under pressure across 50 overs, not just in bursts. Her own framing is sensible too: use the young players well, use the experienced players properly, and keep improving the overall structure of the side.

Hambantota is where the talk has to become performance

She has also pointed to the conditions in Hambantota, which is the sort of detail that matters more than slogans once the match begins. Sri Lanka will know the ground better, and Pakistan will need to be disciplined enough to handle pressure situations and stay positive for the length of an ODI. That is not a glamorous challenge. It is a serious one.

And that is why this series deserves attention. The first ODI is on July 23, followed by the second on July 25 and the third on July 28, all in Hambantota. After that comes a three-match T20I series in Dambulla on July 31, August 2 and August 4. For now, though, the focus has to stay on the ODIs, because that is where Pakistan can strengthen their standing and make a clear statement.

Fatima Sana has given the right brief. Now Pakistan have to deliver it. If they really are ready to build something more durable, this is the sort of series where it should start showing.
