Kilmarnock head to Peterhead today knowing a point will be enough to secure top spot in Group H and a place in the last 16 of the Premier Sports Cup.
That gives the trip a clear edge, even with a Premiership opener away at St Johnstone waiting next weekend. For Neil McCann, though, the wider point is just as important: this is still a squad in the early stages of its preparations, and he does not expect everything to click instantly.
McCann: results matter, but the sharpness is still coming
Kilmarnock have started the campaign unbeaten, and on Tuesday night Greg Kiltie's winner against Hamilton Accies made it three successive clean sheets. Even so, McCann said the team are still searching for their top gear.
He thanked the fans for turning out and said he understood any frustration if the scoring has not yet matched the end of last season. But he stressed that the cup matches are being treated as a proper competition, not as a warm-up.
“I take this very seriously. This isn’t just pre-season to me, this is a proper cup competition,” McCann said. He added that Kilmarnock are “so early in our preparations” and that the players “are still searching for that top gear, and they’ve not found it yet.”
That is a fair reflection of where the team are right now. The results have been solid, the defence has been organised, and the unbeaten run has kept momentum moving in the right direction. But McCann’s message suggests there is still another level to find before the league campaign begins.
Versatility and work rate stood out
McCann also highlighted the contribution of the 24-year-old Euan Bowie, who was on loan at Albion Rovers last season under Sandy Clark. Against Hamilton Accies, McCann asked him to play out of position in a tight diamond, with the aim of getting him moving down the right side.
McCann described him as “a really intelligent footballer” and praised his willingness to work, along with his power and pace. He said that was part of the reason he wanted to bring him to the club.
For Kilmarnock, that sort of flexibility matters in a short cup group where every result has weight. A point at Peterhead would remove the uncertainty, finish the group job early and allow the club to keep building toward next weekend’s league opener with a little more confidence.
For Peterhead, meanwhile, the task is straightforward: stop Kilmarnock from getting the result they need. For Kilmarnock, the target is even simpler. One point is enough.
