Cory Barlog used God of War Laufey Comic-Con to draw a straight line from Faye’s game to the next Kratos-led chapter. At the God of War Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, he said the new game comes after God of War Laufey and connects directly to her story.

“Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next,” Barlog said. That puts God of War Laufey in more than a standalone slot: it is now the bridge between the current phase of the franchise and whatever Santa Monica Studio builds next around Kratos.

Barlog also said, “Faye is, while it's a different thing, it's still part of the larger tapestry of what we truly really want to explore, all of these different characters in there.” He added, “But there's always going to be Kratos games, like, throughout the whole history. We're super excited about that.”

The framing matters because it answers the franchise’s direction without locking down the details that usually shape a new release plan. There is no title, platform, setting, or release date for the next Kratos-led game yet, so the only hard roadmap is sequence: God of War Laufey first, Kratos next.

February 16, 2027 for Laufey

God of War Laufey now has a February 16, 2027 release date. The game’s first gameplay glimpse arrived in a 20-minute segment at the end of June’s PlayStation State of Play showcase, opening with Kratos and Atreus burning Faye’s body as seen in 2018’s God of War.

Kratos appears again shortly after, aiding Faye while she is briefly imprisoned. That keeps him visible inside a game centered on Faye, which is where some of the pushback has landed: the story is being positioned as a lead-in to the next Kratos chapter, but Kratos is not the center of this one.

What the franchise now signals

“We can't not tell stories about the big guy,” Lawrence said at the God of War Laufey panel, and that is the useful takeaway for Fans of God of War. Santa Monica Studio is not treating Kratos as finished; it is treating God of War Laufey as the setup piece that carries the series into its next main entry.

For readers tracking the franchise’s direction, the practical update is simple: God of War Laufey is the near-term release, and the next Kratos-led God of War game is the long-term payoff. The only missing pieces are the title and rollout details, and those are still off the table for now.
