Lando Norris claimed pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix after producing a late 1m 17.207s lap in the closing moments of Q3.
On a circuit where overtaking opportunities are limited, that result carries extra weight. Track position at the Hungaroring can be the difference between controlling the race and spending most of it stuck behind traffic, so starting first is a major advantage.
How qualifying unfolded
The session built steadily after three hours of practice earlier in the day. In Q1, Fernando Alonso set the early benchmark with a 1m 20.685s lap on soft tyres, before Lewis Hamilton moved into the 1m 18s bracket on medium tyres.
Max Verstappen then went quickest by 0.074s, only for Kimi Antonelli to move ahead of Hamilton as the order continued to change. Norris also showed front-running pace in Q1, setting a lap that put him more than three tenths clear at the top.
Q3 ended with late drama when Verstappen spun and George Russell stranded his car, which brought out yellow flags and added pressure to the drivers still pushing for position. Norris handled the final moments best, crossing the line with the pole-winning lap just as the session was reaching its conclusion.
What it means for Sunday
With pole secured, Norris has given himself the best possible starting point for the race. At a venue like the Hungaroring, that matters even more than usual because clean air and track position are so valuable.
The weekend also had added intrigue after both Ferrari drivers showed promising form in practice, setting up a qualifying session that looked open before Norris delivered when it mattered most. The result leaves him on the front row of the weekend story, with the grid now shaped by a session that rewarded timing, precision and composure under pressure.
