Inter Miami head into Montréal with a simple but important question hanging over the team sheet: who starts in goal? Dayne St. Clair arrived in 2025 with a strong reputation after winning MLS Goalkeeper of the Year with Minnesota United, but his numbers at Inter Miami have not matched that standard, and the case for Rocco Ríos Novo is growing.
St. Clair has allowed 28 goals in 14 Inter Miami matches and kept only two clean sheets, a return that stands out even more when set against the expectations around him. By contrast, Ríos Novo has given the coaching staff a reason to think twice after taking over the starting role in October 2025 and helping Inter Miami go 8-1.
The St. Clair problem
The main issue is not talent. It is adaptation. St. Clair was built for a different kind of environment at Minnesota United, where the game can be managed in a more defensive shape. Inter Miami ask their goalkeeper to live with more pressure, more space behind the line and more moments where one mistake can change the tone of the match.
That difference matters. A keeper can be excellent in one setting and still need time to settle in another, especially when the team in front of him plays with such an aggressive rhythm. St. Clair has also had to deal with the setback of losing Canada’s starting goalkeeper job to Maxime Crépeau, which does not help confidence at a stage when rhythm and assurance are everything.
Why Rocco Ríos Novo is in the conversation
Ríos Novo has done what every backup wants to do when the chance arrives: make the decision harder. He was part of the 2023 USL Championship-winning Phoenix Rising side, and at Inter Miami he has shown that the role does not have to be treated as temporary just because the original plan looked different.
As one fan put it, Ríos Novo looked better with a worse defense last year than St. Clair does this year, and until that changes there is a clear argument for sticking with the hotter option. Another view was even more direct: RNN should be backed right now because there is no obvious reason to change while the results remain stronger.
That is the practical reality for Inter Miami. Clubs chasing trophies do not have much patience for selection debates once a goalkeeper has given them a stretch of good results. Ríos Novo has helped stabilize the position, and in a side that won the 2025 MLS Cup, stability matters.
What comes next at Montréal?
Montréal will not decide the issue on its own, but it will tell us plenty about where Inter Miami are leaning. If Ríos Novo keeps the shirt, it will be because the coaching staff believe form should win out over reputation. If St. Clair returns, it will be a statement of trust in his long-term quality.
Either way, this is no longer a minor selection call. It is one of those moments where a manager has to decide whether to reward the player who has settled quickest or persist with the goalkeeper who was supposed to be the safer long-term answer. For Inter Miami, that choice could shape the tone of the next run of matches.
