The Southern Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids will peak together on July 30 into July 31, 2026, putting two meteor showers on the same summer nights. A 98 percent illuminated moon is expected to wash out many of the fainter meteors, though observers may still catch the Alpha Capricornids’ brighter fireballs.

Devon Salasin, head astronomer at Stargazing Moab, said the timing is a coincidence in the sky. “It is by complete happenstance that the debris trails from two different comets intersect where our planet passes through, creating the overlapping peaks.”
That overlap is the reason July 30 and 31 matter to skywatchers. The Southern Delta Aquariids can send up numerous faint streaks, while the Alpha Capricornids usually produce fewer meteors but more dramatic fireballs, so the same viewing window offers very different kinds of activity.
Moonlight and fireballs
July’s full moon arrives on July 29, leaving the peak night under strong moonlight. Salasin said observers may still have a shot at the show’s brightest side: “Stay with it, and you can maybe see a glimpse of what this shower is best known for—slow-moving, bright fireballs.”
Alex Gianninas, an astronomy professor at Connecticut College, described the split in appearance this way: “Besides originating from slightly different spots in the sky, what is known as the radiant of the meteor showers, the Delta Aquariids offer more frequent, faint streaks, while the Alpha Capricornids are famous for slower, dazzling fireballs.” He added: “Most meteors are very small, sometimes the size of small dust particles, whereas meteors that create a more visible fireball are large in size, from pebble to boulder-sized chunks of rock.”
July and August viewing
The Southern Delta Aquariids stay active from mid-July into late August, and the Alpha Capricornids run from early July into mid-August, so meteors from both showers may appear outside the main peak. Under ideal viewing conditions, the Southern Delta Aquariids can produce around 25 meteors per hour, compared with about five per hour for the Alpha Capricornids.
For the best chance of seeing either shower, skywatchers should find the darkest available location, allow at least 20 minutes for their eyes to adjust, and look overhead while reclining for a wide view. No telescope is necessary. The next major meteor display mentioned is the Perseids, due to peak on the night of August 12 into the morning of August 13.
