IMPD found a newborn baby near a trail on Lace Bark Lane and Long Wharf Drive shortly before midnight on July 24 and is looking for the mother. The infant was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition.

Officers had been dispatched to check on the welfare of a child, according to a July 25 press release. By noon on July 26, IMPD had not provided IndyStar with an update on the baby or the mother’s condition, and Lucy Tobier had requested that update.
IMPD and Safe Haven Law
Police said they are concerned about the mother’s safety and are asking anyone with information about the unidentified mother to come forward. Informants may remain anonymous. Indiana’s Safe Haven Law allows someone to anonymously surrender an infant without prosecution, and after that surrender the baby is placed under Child Protective Services or a Licensed Child Placing Agency.
The case now turns on two plain questions: who the mother is and how the newborn came to be left near the trail. Until someone with firsthand information speaks up, those answers stay with the people who were there that night.
