The Gordie Howe Bridge is slated to open to public motorists at noon on Monday, July 27, giving drivers a new crossing over the Detroit River between the United States and Canada. Pedestrians and cyclists will have to wait until 8 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, to use the dedicated multiuse path.
Drivers will reach the bridge on the U.S. side through a 1.8-mile interchange on Interstate 75 between Springwells Street and Clark Avenue in Detroit. Connecting ramps run straight from Interstate 75 to the new U.S. Port of Entry, while the Windsor, Ontario, approach uses Highway 401, the E.C. Row Expressway and Ojibway Parkway.
Windsor port of entry tolls
Fares for the Gordie Howe International Bridge are collected only on the Canadian side at the Windsor port of entry for travel in both directions. Travelers can pay with cash, credit or debit cards, or digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay.
Cash is accepted only in attended lanes, and the toll lanes are managed to reduce queue lengths and save time. The Breakaway program offers up to 25% off standard tolls, automated RFID lane access and free vehicle tags, with registration and tags free in the program.
Detroit access and ID
Visitors using the bike and pedestrian entrance can reach the U.S. side near Delray Park around Rademacher Street and West Jefferson Avenue in Detroit. The path connects directly to local routes including the Joe Louis Greenway and Iron Belle Trail, giving walkers and cyclists a separate crossing once it opens.
Proper ID is required for the international crossing, and enhanced driver’s licenses are issued by five states: Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Washington. Those licenses carry the same federal privileges as a REAL ID and also allow land or sea entry into Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean nations.
The opening gives motorists the first use of the bridge’s direct highway-to-highway links, while the free path comes later for pedestrians and cyclists. That split schedule leaves one crossing in service for vehicles on July 27 and another still waiting for Aug. 5.
