The Schoharie County Sheriff's Office is investigating a suspected animal cruelty case after deputies responded to a residence in the Town of Carlisle around 8 p.m. Friday, July 24. Deputies found multiple animals in distress, including puppies with severe medical conditions, and moved three critically ill puppies for emergency treatment in Latham.
The response expanded over the weekend and ended with 78 animals removed from the property. The group included surrendered puppies, seized dogs, cats, birds, chickens and horses, and the animals were sent for care or evaluation.
Town of Carlisle response
Deputies returned Saturday morning with the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley, the Susquehanna SPCA and Town of Carlisle Dog Control. At that point, more puppies were found in critical condition, and the owner voluntarily surrendered them to the Susquehanna SPCA before they were taken for emergency veterinary treatment. Animal Control schedule changes can affect how quickly local agencies coordinate, but in this case the response moved from welfare check to rescue within hours.
Town of Carlisle Dog Control and the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley assisted with the emergency treatment response. The first three critically ill puppies were transported to Upstate Veterinary Specialties in Latham for emergency treatment, showing that the most urgent cases were separated out immediately before the larger property search was finished.
Search warrant and seizures
As the investigation continued, deputies obtained a search warrant for the property and seized additional animals. That step separated the voluntary surrender of some puppies from the later removal of the rest of the animals, including 12 seized dogs, nine seized cats, 31 seized birds, five seized chickens and four seized horses.
The remaining animals were transported to the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley and the Susquehanna SPCA for care and evaluation. The full count reached 78 animals, and the Sheriff's Office said the case remains active. A separate Animal Kingdom Lodge video is unrelated, but it reflects how quickly animal cases can shift from a single report to a wider response.
Carlisle investigation
For people tied to the property, the practical outcome is immediate: the animals are out of the home and under rescue and veterinary care, while the Sheriff continues the investigation. The unanswered issue is what conditions led to the severe medical distress that prompted the weekend response in the first place.
