Harvey Barnes has signed a new long-term contract with Newcastle United before the new season starts, securing one of the club’s most productive attacking players for the years ahead.
Barnes still had two years left on his previous deal, but Newcastle moved early to extend his stay after a season in which he scored 16 goals in 57 appearances in all competitions. That marked a career high for goals and underlined why the club sees him as an important part of what it considers his prime years.
Since arriving from Leicester City in summer 2023, Barnes has scored 30 goals in 120 games for Newcastle United. He also delivered one of the most memorable moments of his time at the club earlier this year, when he scored the latest winning goal in Premier League history against Leeds United with a 102nd-minute strike.
What Barnes said about the extension
Barnes said it feels great to sign the contract early and before the season begins. He described his time at the club as an amazing journey so far, saying he has come to understand even more about what makes Newcastle United special after three years there.
He added that he loves everything about the club, including the city, the stadium and the people, and said he wants to keep building on the success he has already enjoyed. Barnes also said he wants to be a key player who helps push the club forward.
Why Newcastle wanted to lock him in
Eddie Howe said the new deal is well deserved and reflects Barnes’ work, quality and consistent ability to produce special moments at key times. Howe also pointed to his calm finishing, whether one-on-one or from distance, and his threat from wide areas.
Ross Wilson also made clear that Newcastle sees Barnes as a major part of its plans. Wilson said the player’s record speaks for itself and that it made total sense to secure his future, especially with Barnes fully focused on the season ahead.
The timing also matters. Barnes returned to the international stage in March and featured in the Wembley friendly against Uruguay, adding another sign that his profile is rising again. With his new deal in place, Newcastle have now tied down a winger whose best years may still be ahead of him.
